Flagship Pioneering was founded to offer an alternative to existing methods of entrepreneurial innovation. The Flagship team conceives, resources, and builds life sciences companies that invent breakthrough technologies, each based on an original product platform, to transform health care and sustainability. Our unique model combines scientific creativity, technological ingenuity, systematic entrepreneurship, executive leadership, professional capital management, and a vast network of expertise into a single institution that produces first-in-category companies though an emergent, evolutionary methodology. We call this process pioneering. Over nearly two decades, this approach has enabled Flagship to originate and foster the development of around 100 science-based companies, resulting in more than $30 billion in aggregate value, thousands of patents, and a pipeline of more than 50 clinical development programs. Flagship has more than $10 billion in private capital raised and managed by the company.

Senda is founded on the insight that human and non-human cells coevolved to exchange molecules continually. Natural nanoparticles evolved to shuttle information biomolecules into human cells, displaying tropism, potency, and repeatability in their interactions. Senda is the first company to decode this natural programming language to unlock full programming to the cell.

Novomer’s synthetic chemical technology allows traditional chemical feedstocks to be combined with carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide to cost effectively synthesize sustainable chemicals and materials for a wide variety of applications. The chemicals and materials contain up to 50% by weight low cost waste carbon dioxide (CO2) or carbon monoxide (CO) and, as a result, have a significantly reduced carbon and energy footprint and advantaged economics as compared to the materials they will replace. Not only do the materials and chemicals offset the use of petroleum derived feedstocks, they also sequester the CO2 and CO for the life of the product, mitigating global warming and climate change.

Plants rely on a vast array of natural, beneficial microbes to support their health and productivity. The community of microbes living in and around a plant—its microbiome—works in harmony with the plant to provide life-sustaining benefits throughout the plant’s lifecycle. They help the plant absorb nutrients in the soil and bolster its resilience to environmental stresses. Inspired by insights from the human microbiome, Indigo started with the hypothesis that microbes living inside the plant (endosymbionts) are vital to their health. But we found that some of these important microbes were being reduced by modern agricultural practices. By using sophisticated genomic sequencing and computational bioinformatics, Indigo has assembled what we believe is the world’s largest database of genomic information from these microbes
