CO2NVERT was trying to disrupt the fossil-fueled commodity chemicals industry by developing a process to convert greenhouse gas carbon dioxide into ethanol. After winning an international competition and raising a first round of funding, we eventually decided to shut down the company because our hypotheses didn't work out. We learned first-hand what many fellow climate tech founders are battling with day and night: Green chemicals need to be at price parity with the grey alternative to capture a meaningful stake of the market.
