I'm delighted to be a part of the Startup Grind Manchester team, for what will now be a record 5th Startup Grind Chapter that I am actively involved in. Having launched Startup Grind Edinburgh in 2014, then going on to launch Glasgow, Aberdeen and Thames Valley, Startup Grind holds a very special place in my heart. There is no startup community quite like it. The Manchester startup ecosystem is thriving with companies such as THG, AO, Push Doctor to mention a few, plus an active investor ecosystem with the likes of Praetura Ventures, Manchester Venture Partners, Sure Valley Ventures and Manchester Angels and let's not forget an enviable tertiary educational system with University of Manchester, Manchester Metropolitan University and University of Salford and of course an ambitious Government backed vision through the Northern Powerhouse which is is all about boosting the local economy by investing in skills, innovation, transport and culture, as well as devolving significant powers and budgets to directly elected mayors to ensure decisions in the North are made by the North, I am excited to be a part of this ecosystem. What has brought me to Manchester ...? Well football of course IYKYK 😉. Let's connect.

HOMESPLACE attempted to develop an innovative finance product that would help tenants become home owners without having to take out a traditional mortgage. The vision was simple, give tenants the opportunity to become home owners through a product that gave them the security of a mortgage, but the flexibility of a tenancy. Through a form of residential crowdfunding, the plan was to create a marketplace where users (tenants) would create their profile and regular investors could contribute to their purchase. Their investment would be secured against the property and they would get a form of interest payment on their investment. The goal was to upend traditional mortgage companies. Whilst it was a grand vision, ultimately it failed for a multitude of reasons. It's great to see that companies like Wayhome are attempting to solve this problem today.

The Tunyana Project is the brainchild of a group of young people who originally attended Our Lady of the Wayside Parish and Youth Group in Harare, Zimbabwe in the nineties. Ten years later the group has reunited with the common goal of helping the orphaned children in Zimbabwe. The Tunyana Project is co-ordinated by a steering committee and Board of Trustees. The word "nyana‟ means "baby birds‟ in Shona. The "tu‟ in "tunyana‟ means little. Literally translated, "tunyana‟ means „little baby birds‟, which highlights their vulnerability, tenderness and need for nurturing. In essence, we as the Tunyana Project see children in orphanages as our precious "little baby birds‟. We hope to be a part of and to encourage and support the nurturing of our tunyana until they reach a stage where they can fly and soar into the sky. Our mission is simple - provide and mobilise financial, professional, social and spiritual support for orphaned children in Zimbabwe. We provide the above support through two key programmes and initiatives, whilst collaborating with other Organisations. These two programmes are Project STEP (Skills, Time & Energy Programme) and LEAP (Legacy, Empowerment & Achievement Programme). Our strengths lie in our ability to mobilise. We believe we can leverage our networks and the networks of our members.
