We are building a community so that coachable people with ideas, companies, and/or motivation can come together to make a difference. Sustainable Startups provides programming and business mentorship, sustainability education and community events for those motivated to make Salt Lake an even better place to live, work and play. Our Entrepreneurship4ALL program has helped hundreds of founders, has won two SBA Growth Accelerator Awards, and is being scaled nationwide in as the curriculum used in the Woodforest Foundry Program.

    Robert was a Venture Partner and ran the day-to-day operations of the Ideaship Fund I and Fund II, including Ideaship's deal flow, deal negotiations, services, portfolio monitoring and reporting, as well as contingency services and entrepreneur support. IP at the early stages can play a role in the valuation at raise, the amount raised, and how valuable your idea and company are when you are looking for an exit. Ideaship Fund is an early-stage patent capital fund providing in-house patent department services, external patent counsel funding, and fundraising support.

    Investable's mission, while I was there during the startup phase, was to reduce the time and improve the likelihood of a company successfully raising money with coaching and consulting, by working alongside the startups using a data-driven approach to help them build roadmaps, implement strategies, and execute on their tactics earlier in the life of a company to improve their outcomes.

    2014 - 2017

    Robert worked alongside the Miller Family and the C-suite executives of the Management Corporation to preserve and perpetuate the Miller spirit throughout the LHM Group. Robert was responsible for corporate events, corporate communications, training and development, and culture. Miller Inspiration's mission is to preserve the principles, philosophies, and practices that Larry and Gail used to successfully grow the LHM Group into a multi-billion dollar organization by sharing them with LHM employees and throughout the Group.

    The Energy Commercialization Center is building a sustainable energy community based in Salt Lake City, Utah that supports the growth of the socially minded entrepreneurs that want to build businesses that have a positive impact on the world. I was first hired as the Program Manager for commercialization, but as the ECC continued to pivot I assumed more responsibility and the role of Executive Director for the Center. I was also name the University of Utah's Principle Investigator (PI) for the Department of Energy grant, which is normally awarded to PhDs.

    2010 - 2012

    I designed and implemented energy efficiency/demand management incentive programs for electric utilities. I managed the FinAnswer Express, PacifiCorp's largest commercial and industrial DSM program, operating in 5 states. It was a 5 year contract worth $18MM and in 2011 my team and I over-delivered on the contracted energy savings and were responsible for delivering over 47M kWh. This is a lot of energy saved, and it led to increased revenue for both Nexant and PacifiCorp.

  • Project Engineer

    2000 - 2010

    Engineering and consulting services in the E&P side of coalbed methane and shale gas industry; Researched and developed business plans, models, letters of intent, and joint venture agreements in the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Australia. Worked with customers, suppliers, subcontractors, engineers, and executive management to complete projects that ranged from field work to analytical testing. Also coordinated equipment manufacturing, refurbishment, modification and sales. Lab Manager/ Field Supervisor Supervised, trained, and managed personnel that performed coal characteristic and analytical testing in both the field and laboratory, which ranged from simple field desorption measurements to sophisticated adsorption isotherm measurements. Prepared and issued reports and invoices for projects ranging from field desorption testing to Helium Pulse Permeability measurements.
