COSTAss (Cyprus Open Source Technology Association) is a non-profit organization supported by sponsorships from its commercial and individual members across Cyprus and the EU. COSTAss aims to accelerate the growth of thriving open collaborative efforts focused on challenges and opportunities of all its Cyprus constituencies, from individuals to public and private sectors, while providing an on-ramp for European projects and companies to succeed and collaborate on a global scale.
Co-Founder
2022
On a mission with Roman Shaposhnik and Michael Bielicki to build a new home in Cyprus for open source engineers and IT companies (especially those escaping the long shadow of the Russo-Ukrainian War). Paperclip was started in February 2022 answering the need for companies and individuals to work on technologically exciting global projects while not compromising on one’s beliefs, rights and safety – and do what we all want to do – create technology that makes a difference. We needed a place that would become a new home for the people who trusted us and for ourselves and we found that in the Republic of Cyprus. We've been here for 1 year, helping people build their teams, companies and lives here – from finding schools to organizing communities, we want people to have a real home. We have also helped repatriate not just individual, but entire businesses complete with GTM strategies for new markets and recapitalization efforts. Some of our efforts have even been covered by the mainstream media (see the links in the Feature section above).
Board Member
2020 - 2023
Discovered the company in 2017 and kept convincing them to take the first VC investment for 3 years. Acquired by Mythical Games
Co-Founder
2020 - 2022
Registered Alternative Investment Fund acting as an umbrella fund. Created for special purpose strategic deals, including - a consolidation play of 2 largest ed tech companies in the region with combined revenue over $100m and preparation for the IPO, - the fastest unicorn in my career (and its OSS!)
Investment Director
2014 - 2022
Almaz Capital is a deep tech VC fund powering the bridge model between developing countries and developed one. As I have started my career in 2014 when a big part of the traditional Almaz region became unavailable for investments (guess which one), I had an opportunity to pioneer exploration of new markets wester into Eastern Europe which contributed greatly to the fund III strategy and fundraising. I’m grateful for having freedom to try new roles and approaches in the fund, like - leading tech theses and tech specific knowledge and networking, which started with cyber security and Positive Hack Days Startup competition, went into blockchain (which lead mostly to stopping fund from investing in lots of companies, but also investing in Dmarket) and then to ML, edge, Open Source and RISC-V, - being deeply involved with portfolio companies besides the classics, e.g. building R&D and product strategy and teams in the region (i.e. Vezet with over $1bn GMV), pivoting from consumer to industrial story with CEO change (i.e. Octonion), bringing in a $25m licensing deal (i.e. Esperanto technologies), - Learning a bunch of operations like handling private LPs subscriptions and closing a fund under very much pressure of a possible security breach, - #Almazzed podcasts! also known as content marketing for portfolio companies.
Member and Secretary
2021 - 2022
A non-profit organization advising the Ministry of Industry and Commerce and Ministry of Digitalization to help coordinate investments, production and demand for microelectronics. We have created the concept of “vertical projects” - an investment proposal that the Council were to approve that had to include - Commitment for a large demand from an industrial/IT/telco customer and commitment to adopt their internal systems and process by the time the product is ready, - The whole stack of required components and companies in this “vertical” that can develop and support it. Thus the idea was of “planned economy” - the investment goes in the multiple companies in the “vertical” partly from gov resources partly from strategics to have in the end a complete product and a large demand to make the economics of the production work. The Council had over $1bn committed from different pockets and approved more than 10 projects. And then on February 24th 2022 it all went to waste.
Lead of Open Source and Open Architectures Group
2021 - 2022
Ran the group under the umbrella of the existing vendor-neutral organization that combined all large IT and telco companies as members and was engaging gov agencies as well. The goals of the group were to oversee the whole OSS stack critical to Russia and facilitate supporting steps such as - Governance & legislation - Local support and maintenance - International collaborations - Gov agencies participation - Funding - University programs, including bringing international collaborations, e.g. for RISC-V Since the creation the group established an internationally recognized dialog on OSS governance in developing countries with the focus on Open Architectures, i.e. the support of standardization of end-to-end stacks on RISC-V. Led the discussion with Linux Foundation for the creation of such Foundation under LF umbrella. And then on February 24th 2022 it all went to waste.
