metaio was one of the leading Computer Vision and Augmented Reality technology providers worldwide. metaio´s vision was to teach smart devices to see, in a fast way, superimpose relevant information and make this base technology available to the masses. metaio was founded in 2003 in Munich, Germany by myself and my co-founder and CTO Peter Meier. We started off with an initial research project with Volkswagen and later received funding from a local research project which helped us bootstrapping our operations in the first years. In 2005 metaio released the first end-consumer Augmented Reality application called KPS Click & Design, allowing users to place virtual furniture into an image. We then released our metaio Platform offering to give third parties the opportunity to create commercial AR solutions. In 2006 we released the first browser plug-in for web-based AR applications and shortly thereafter, launched the first fully integrated AR app for mobile devices and the first print/web campaign followed by the release of the mobile AR browser junaio. In 2011, Metaio won the ISMAR Tracking Competition for the world's first mobile 3-D tracking solution. metaio offered the most versatile and robust mobile development platform as well as services and support to brands all over the world. With over 10 years of experience offering AR and CV software and solutions to more than 1000 B2B customers and over 120,000 developers, Metaio was the international leader in computer vision and augmented reality.
