  • General Manager, AWS CodePipeline & CodeDeploy

    2018 - 2020

Led the teams responsible for AWS CodePipeline and AWS CodeDeploy, a pair of web services that allow AWS customers to automate their software and infrastructure release processes and assist them on their journey towards continuous delivery. Grew service adoption by 190%, usage by 1060%, and revenue by 760% in 24 months. Maintained 99.95% availability SLAs, delivered a number of critical features, and launched services in 5 new regions. Interfaced with executives and engineering leaders at Fortune 500 companies to understand their engineering processes and requirements and evolved CodePipeline and CodeDeploy to meet those requirements.

  • Senior Engineering Manager, Infrastructure Platform

    2014 - 2018

Led Riot’s Infrastructure Platform (IP) organization of roughly one hundred people across eleven different cross-functional teams. Was responsible for designing, building, and operating the backend infrastructure for the services behind League of Legends and other products including everything from the physical build of Riot’s datacenters and service provider network all the way up to Riot’s tooling for deploying, orchestrating, discovering, configuring, and monitoring microservices.

  • Software Development Manager

    2011 - 2014

Managed fifteen engineers across pair of teams within Amazon’s e-Commerce Platform (eCP) organization that owned the company’s internal web frameworks, which were used to render most of Amazon.com, branded Amazon marketplaces like Audible and Javari, and third-party marketplaces like MTV and Creative. Navigated the process of moving those frameworks from a quarterly release cycle to continuous delivery, which eliminated the need for infrequent and painful upgrades and allowed teams to deliver value to customers much more quickly. Moved to the Builder Tools (BT) organization to manage twenty people across four teams that owned critical internal tools that were used by essentially every engineer at Amazon. Delivered the first version of the company’s third-party package import system, drastic improvements to the templating engine that was used to spin up new websites and web services, and the initial plumbing so that teams could use the internal build system and deploy with containers. Interviewed hundreds of candidates as both a hiring manager and a Bar Raiser.

  • Senior Software Engineer

    2005 - 2011

Joined Microsoft as a Software Development Engineer in Test (SDET) on the company’s Bing search engine. Wrote test automation for critical features including Bing’s market detection algorithm and the classifier that decides whether instant answers (math, weather, sports, etc.) should fire for search queries. Also led the development of a product that gave teams a self-service way to fire shadow traffic at their test environments, and to modify that traffic in interesting ways to find bugs. Moved into a management role as the Development Lead for the team that owned Bing’s infrastructure for aggregating, processing, and reporting on big data. Led a team of five engineers as we shipped a real-time Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) pipeline for operational data as well as visualizations on top of the data that allowed the Network Operations Center (NOC) to view the health of the live site and take action when necessary. Transitioned briefly back into an individual contributor role as a Senior Software Development Engineer (SDE) to architect systems for improving engineering efficiency across Bing and the Online Service Division (OSD). Helped to design and implement a package management system to simplify cross-team dependencies and speed up build and release cycles.

  • Software Engineer

    2003 - 2005

Built software for a firm that provides retirement plan consulting and administration. Designed and implemented a website built on top of third-party middleware that allowed retirement plan participants to get detailed information about mutual funds, trade and rebalance funds, request loans, and view historical account performance and supported onboarding of 100k+ plan participants onto the site.

  • Founder & CEO

    2002 - 2003

Founded and led a small software company and launched a Software as a Service (SaaS) employee time-tracking and communication product called Overtime that was tailored for small and medium businesses (SMBs). In order to stay afloat during the development of that product, we took on several freelance development projects including a pair of e-commerce websites and software that calculated advanced metrics on mutual fund performance for a large financial firm.
